Throughout his career, Duncan has drawn his inspiration from the shadows and textures of the land, as well as the figures who inhabit it. His photographic influences have ranged from surfing New Zealand’s coast to the back streets of Barcelona. His academic background is in the study of people and how they interact with the environment and Duncan has brought this sensibility to his photography.

With a love of the outdoors and an interest in exploring how people interact with the environment, he draws on a lifetime of familiarity with the landscape, particularly a childhood spent tramping and camping in the South Island backcountry. He particularly loves being outside in the still of the morning or evening, when the clear New Zealand light is at its most subtle.

His work has distinctive minimalistic, moody, and atmospheric nuances, best exemplified in his favourite weather to photograph: fog. It’s soothing calm and stillness creates the perfect foil for the composition held between the four walls of the image.

However, with a singular focus on light and composition, Duncan enjoys finding the subtle beauty in the everyday, on set he is calm and easy-going, he’s able to blend in to any environment, making the photographic experience enjoyable for everyone.

He enjoys collaborating with like minded people to help tell their story through his photographic vision.
